Pseudoavoidance responses in two-way avoidance learning

Abstract: In a two-way avoidance learning task, responses sometimes occur during the CS-UCS interval prior to the initial receipt of shock. The number of such pseudoavoidance (P A) responses was found to be related positively to the number of avoidance responses made after the receipt of shock, implying that some of these avoidance responses were artifactual. The use of procedures that would decrease the occurrence of P A responses would also minimize this possible contamination of the avoidance data. Evidence was prese… Show more

“…In order to familiarize subjects with the learning conditions and reduce both the number of pseudo avoidance responses and the inverted relation that exists between shock intensity and performance because of fear(Dieter, 1977; D. McAllister & McAllister, 1979; W. McAllister, McAllister, Dieter, & James, 1979), every animal was given three shuttle box adaptation sessions, one per day, each consisting of 20 min of free ambulation in the shuttle box (Campden Instruments).…”

“…Parameters such as the angular separation of binary stars [1][2][3][4][5][6] and the angular diameter of giant stars [7][8][9] have been measured within the diffraction limit of large telescopes . Accurate power spectra of the solar granulation have been obtained over twice the previously measured frequency range [10,11] .…”
