“…Various types of CLPs containing cyclobutadienoid moieties have been synthesized by means of debrominative [2 + 2] cycloaddition, and they exhibited unique optoelectronic properties. 148,149 For example, a linearly fused coronene-cyclobutadienoid polymer featured an exceptionally narrow indirect band gap of 600 meV. 148 Poly(indenoindene) is a CLP consisting of an alternating sequence of five-and six-membered rings.…”

The synthesis of poly(indenoindene) has remained challenging to date because of the inherent reactivity of the indenofluorene monomers.…”

“…Likewise, more such structures consisting of tetragons and octagons GBs are predicted and show width-dependent periodic electronic properties. Subsequently, these structures with different widths are sequentially synthesized , through on-surface synthesis approach. More interestingly, the polycyclic [N]Phenylenes, with alternatively fused tetragonal cyclobutadienoid and hexagonal benzenoid rings, has been reported using different synthetic strategies. Not only that, Schlütter et al has proposed a strategy for preparing biphenylenes as well, and they even synthesized a carbon planar structure containing two staggered row of tetragons and octagons …”

“…In contrast, on-surface synthesis provides a versatile and convenient pathway for the atomically precise synthesis of one-dimensional nanostructures, , including conjugated polymers and graphene nanoribbons, and allows the direct, atomic-resolution characterization of the structure and electronic properties of the products through scanning probe techniques . In the past 15 years, a variety of organic polymers consisting of individual chains have been synthesized on surfaces, and the accurate characterization of these polymers has provided in-depth insights into the structure–function relationship of polymers. Therefore, we conceived a new strategy of on-surface synthesis of DPs through a divergent cross-coupling reaction (DCR) developed in our previous studies, which is expected to afford atomically precise structures with distinct conformations and configurations.…”
