Pruritus in Pregnancy

Abstract: Pruritus in pregnancy is a common and burdensome symptom that may be a first sign of a pregnancy-specific pruritic disease (atopic eruption of pregnancy, polymorphic eruption of pregnancy, pemphigoid gestationis, and intrahepatic cholestasis in pregnancy) or a dermatosis coinciding with pregnancy by chance. Despite its high prevalence, pruritus is often underrated by physicians, and data regarding the safety profiles of drugs for pruritus are very limited. In this review, we illustrate the epidemiology, possib… Show more

“…Also, pruritus is one of the leading dermatological symptoms during gestation and has been estimated to experience in 18%–40% of pregnancies. In addition to being related to specific dermatoses of pregnancy, pruritus may occur from exacerbation of preexisting dermatoses, and dermatoses that coincidently develop during gestation 25 . Thus, a novel biomarker should be determined that represents a useful diagnostic tool for pregnancies complicated with chronic pruritus.…”
