Historical maps represent a unique and irreplaceable source of information about the history of a country, be it large (historical) regions, individual geomorphological units or specifically defined sites. Using a methodologically correct, critical historical analysis, old maps provide both the horizontal and vertical analysis of a landscape and its transformation in different time periods. These maps represent some of the oldest, but relatively easily accessible, historical pictorial documents (plausibly) depicting historical landscapes. This study provides the methodology for processing and georeferencing old mine maps with the possibility of their further use for the purposes of mining tourism. The 1696 Marsigli mine map has been chosen for the case study in question. It depicts a cross-section of the copper mines in Smolník and shows in detail the process of cementation water mining. Through an analysis and a detailed study, two-dimensional parts of a georeferenced historical map have been plotted in Google Earth’s three-dimensional space.

La importancia de la cartografía antigua para la planificación ambiental, económica y estratégica de un espacio geográfico es fundamental para entender los patrones espaciales del pasado y para proyectar las decisiones futuras relativas a la planificación del territorio. A partir tanto de la revisión de guías, protocolos y de la literatura técnica y científica, como de la experiencia previa de los autores en proyectos afines, el presente artículo realiza la revisión y sistematización del proceso de digitalización y publicación de cartografía antigua en medios digitales que pueda ser útil para futuros desarrollos de bibliotecas, archivos públicos, acervos privados, universidades u otras instituciones interesadas en desplegar y hacer accesibles sus colecciones cartográficas en formato digital. El presente trabajo ofrece como resultado una guía metodológica para la solución de esta problemática común en las ciencias de la información, la historia y la geografía.

The following study relates the qualities and uses of the GeoAcademy Project, a program designed with the aim of geolocating scientific articles automatically, such articles would be found in Scopus, Web of Science, or similar databases. An algorithm has been developed with the intention of capturing geographical coordinates or toponyms contained within the documents in order to perform reliable geolocation. In the methodology, we describe the stages of the project that have been necessary so as to build a sample database concerning the Sierra Nevada (Spain), as well as the development of the algorithm. The technical data regarding the employment of the algorithm on the sample documents and its levels of success are included in the results, as is an explanation of the platform containing web maps which can be utilised to show the texts which have been geolocated. In conclusion we outline the obstacles faced, potential bibliometric uses and the advantages it offers as a reference resource and source of information.
