Proximity across the distant worlds of university–industry collaborations

Abstract: This paper examines the extent to which firms perceive different dimensions of proximity to be important for the formation of their interactions with universities. Furthermore, it investigates whether the importance of the different types of proximities varies depending on the type of interaction-be it about knowledge exploration, knowledge exploitation, competence enhancement, advice-seeking or marketing. Using data from a survey of 1,200 Norwegian firms, we find that most managers believe cognitive, institut… Show more

“…We have started exploring this map by focusing on geography. Still, we know that other dimensions may prove essential (Basile et al, 2012; Boschma, 2005; Paci et al, 2014), especially for the collaborations between universities and industry (Alpaydin & Fitjar, 2021), since spillovers may travel through many channels, such as student and researchers' mobility or collaborative networks within cognitive communities.…”

“…Hence, there are no existing instruments on which to build such an analysis. However, an emerging literature has used survey data to examine how actors perceive their relationship with partners (Alpaydın & Fitjar, 2020; Fitjar et al., 2016). Building on this literature, we apply a similar approach to examine actors' perceptions of the proximity benefits of the collaboration with their most important university partner.…”

“…In March 2021, he completed his PhD with research on University-Industry Collaborations (UICs). In this research, he investigates how proximity, being a multidimensional concept -including geographical and a variety of non-geographical dimensions such as cognitive, organisational, institutional and social -plays a bridging role between the two worlds of academia and industry and facilitates the formation of universityindustry linkages (Alpaydin, 2021;Alpaydın, 2019;Alpaydın & Fitjar, 2021). His results illustrate that UICs motivated by the need for capacity development and relying on cognitive proximity are less sensitive to distance, while geographical proximity matter more for firms intending to create societal impact and build their collaboration on institutional and social proximity.…”
