Proximate Composition and Fatty Acid Analysis of Puffer Fish, Lagocephalus inermis (Temminck and Schlegel, 1850) and Lagocephalus lunaris (Bloch and Schneider, 1801) from Parangipettai, Southeast Coast of India

Abstract: The nutritional effects of marine food have increased far and wide due to the beneficial effects of consuming marine food, fats and oils. In general, the proximate composition is well known as a proportion composition of basic elements such as protein, lipids, carbohydrate, minerals and water. The puffer fish Lagocephalus lunaris and Lagocephalus inermis were collected at Mudasal odai fish landing centre and the skin and visceral organs like gonads and intestines were removed the edible portion only took for t… Show more

“…The n-3 and n-6 fatty acids in Lagocephalus lunaris and Lagocephalus inermis (puffer fish) were 31.17% and 31.19%, while n-6 PUFA were 7.26% and 7.29%, respectively. [45] EPA and DHA display several properties which are beneficial for human health. In addition to reducing the risk of some cardiovascular diseases [46] and cancers, [47] they also can improve various functions in the human organs.…”

“…Ray et al (2014) stated that the moisture content of Leiodon cutcutia ranges from about 66.52-82.28%. Eswar et al (2014) worked with Legocephalus inermis and Legocephalus lunaris and showed that it contains about 86.05% and 80.32% moisture in the proximate composition respectively.…”

“…To human, TTX is deadly, up to 1,200 times more poisonous than cyanide. Despite the risk of being intoxicated, puffer fish are being used as food to meet the nutritional requirements of increasing population by many Asian countries (Eswar et al, 2014).…”

“…Tao et al (2012), studying the TMS levels in different pufferfish species, found that the TMS levels of three different Fugu species were in the range of 1.47-1.54%. Eswar et al (2014) reported the TMS level of pufferfish belonging to the species Lagocephalus inermis as 1.27%. These results match with the results of present study.…”
