Proximal metatarsal osteotomy for hallux valgus: an audit of radiologic outcome after single screw fixation and full postoperative weightbearing

Abstract: BackgroundProximal metatarsal osteotomy combined with a distal soft-tissue procedure is a common treatment for moderate to severe hallux valgus. Secure stabilisation of the metatarsal osteotomy is necessary to avoid complications such as delayed union, nonunion or malunion as well as loss of correction. The aim of this study was to report our results using a single screw for stabilisation of the osteotomy.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed 151 patients with severe hallux valgus who were treated by the above me… Show more

“…Studies have shown that digitized radiologic images are commonly used to assess the severity objectively in patients with HV deformity (21)(22)(23)(24). The purpose of this study is aimed to better evaluate the importance of foot deformity in diabetic foot patients through the imaging measurement of HV deformity.…”

“…Most cases of correction loss at osteotomy sites occur within 6 weeks after surgery [ 28 ]. We compared the 1–2 IMA and angle of AMLC immediately and 6 weeks after surgery to define loss of correction as the point when the two parameters changed by more than 5°.…”

“…A primary rigid osteosynthesis is recommended to prevent these complications. Historically, the proximal chevron osteotomy was fixed with a single screw [ 10 ], compared to two crossed screws for the modified Lapidus arthrodesis [ 11 ]. In recent years, locking plates have been introduced for the fixation in these procedures, due to their biomechanical advantages.…”
