Abstract. We present a Virtual Proxemics Model inspired by Hall's Proxemics Theory targeting wearable technology design and use. In Virtual Proxemics the degree of data control defines different levels of data spaces personal closeness including: Intimate, Personal, Social and Public in the same way Hall's proxemics defines these for physical distance from a person. This model is important for wearable technology design due to the design characteristics of wearables such as: attention-free, invisibility, closeness to the body, sensory linked, controllability and always-on that may compromise a wearer's ability to adequately control data either coming to them or being sent. We describe an experience with a wearable system, called 'The Cat in the Map.' In this system, when strangers accessed the wearer's Intimate data space, she became uncomfortable, consistent with the model. Likewise, when her intimate relations accessed the same data space, she enjoyed the experience. Thus, we see that Virtual Proxemics Model aligns with wearer's experience of data control that may be suitable for the design of automated data access control mechanisms.

Collocated Multi-user Gestural Interactions with Unmodified Wearable Devices

Many real-life scenarios can benefit from both physical proximity and natural gesture interaction. In this paper, we explore shared collocated interactions on unmodified wearable devices. We introduce an interaction technique which enables a small group of people to interact using natural gestures. The proximity of users and devices is detected through acoustic ranging using inaudible signals, while in-air hand gestures are recognized from threeaxis accelerometers. The underlying wireless communication between the devices is handled over Bluetooth for scalability and extensibility. We present (1) an overview of the interaction technique and (2) an extensive evaluation using unmodified, off-the-shelf, mobile, and wearable devices which show the feasibility of the method. Finally, we demonstrate the resulting design space with three examples of multi-user application scenarios.

Abstract. The multitude of interactive devices we use daily has steadily increased since the advent of personal computers. Also, the spreading ubiquitous computing leaves the users with increasing number of device ensembles. There is often a need to change the device in use, which requires moving applications, data, user interfaces or parts of them to other device(s) and back. This is the case, when something is manipulated on one device and a need to migrate it towards another device exists as well. In order to study the problems of such migration functionality, we defined, designed and implemented a proof-of-concept prototype for automatic context-aware migration of Web applications between devices. The prototype was evaluated in three distinct modes (manual, assisted and automatic) with a user study to collect technical data and user feedback. The results highlighted interesting correlations between the system behaviour and user ratings, and statistically relevant differences on how users perceived the proposed modes of the system.
