Provision of Voltage Ancillary Services Through Enhanced TSO-DSO Interaction and Aggregated Distributed Energy Resources

Abstract: The electrical energy generated from renewable energy resources connected to transmission and distribution systems and the displacement of synchronous generators continues to grow. This presages a paradigm-shift away from the traditional provision of ancillary services, essential to ensure a robust system, from transmission-connected synchronous generators towards provision from synchronous and non-synchronous generation (including distribution-connected resources). Given that the available resources at the di… Show more

“…Some of the reviewed papers added reactive power to MGs bidding strategy; for instance, in [20] arbitrage strategy of virtual power plants in coupled energy, reactive, and spinning reserve markets is modeled by considering power systems reliability and MGs profit. The first goal of [21] is to present a strategy to coordinate DER and traditional resources for providing a stable voltage and having safe and stable power system. In [22], a novel control scheme is presented to illustrate the undeniable effect of renewable AS in systems with high penetration of RES by using smart inverters of PV systems and limiting the voltage and frequency fluctuations.…”

“…wind farm) [33]. The SG has been modelled as a standard salient-pole synchronous machine rated at 102 MVA, integrating automatic voltage regulator, a power system stabilizer and over-excitation limiters [34]. The wind farm consists of the 50 × 2 MVA variable speed wind turbines, yielding a total of 100 MVA.…”

“…An interesting aspect of the flexibility offered by DERs lies in their reactive power capabilities and how they can be utilized to provide coordinated voltage ancillary services at the points of interconnection between the distribution and transmission network [12], [13]. It should be ensured that the activation of this flexibility does not violate the distribution network constraints or has undesirable effects in the distribution network operation.…”
