Providing temporal isolation in the OSGi framework

Abstract: The OSGi Framework is a run-time environment for deploying service-containing Java components. Dynamically reconfigurable Java applications can be developed through the Framework's powerful capabilities such as installing, uninstalling, updating components at run-time, and allowing the substitution of service implementations at run-time. Coupled with the capability to be remotely managed, the OSGi Framework is proving a success in a variety of application domains. One domain where it is yet to make an impact i… Show more

“…The Event Channel within the Controller process events with stringent QoS requirements such as timeliness, causal relationship, etc. Different from a recent study [51] that aims to augment existing OSGi with real-time constructs, we provide a clear separation between real-time event processing and the existing OSGi framework. This allows for interoperability with existing OSGi components/services used in various applications while supporting the end-to-end QoS requirements required in CPS applications.…”

“…However it was shown in [8] that even when using these two technologies together problems remain which prevent real-time systems from being developed, such as unbounded dynamism, runaway threads, and issues with worst case execution time (WCET) calculation.…”

“…Section 6 concludes the paper and Section 7 describes future work II. RELATED WORK Our work on admission control in this paper builds on the work carried out in [8]. In reference [8] the use of the OSGi Framework and RTSJ together is explored, giving the motivation for and problems with using these technologies together.…”
