Providing IP QoS over GEO satellite systems using MPLS

Abstract: SUMMARYMulti-protocol label switching (MPLS) is a promising technology that is quickly gathering momentum as a solution for delivering quality of service (QoS) on IP-based terrestrial networks. It is then appropriate to wonder how this technology could a!ect the next generation satellite networks (from at least an interoperability standpoint) and if satellite network designers should implement MPLS on their space segment (and if yes, how?). These are the main questions that this paper is addressing. We will sho… Show more

“…If the NGSI operator wants to offer both AOS and IP, then MPLS is a good solution since it can support both protocols. MPLS is also a recommended method for IP and AOS integration [14] . Its traffic aggregation (using CCSDS AOS VCA merge and multicast support capabilities) makes it very attractive for satellite networks.…”

“…Reference [15] examines the use of OBS within an otherwise transparent payload in the context of a satellite with multiple spot beams. This type of system can provide, on top of the normal advantages of a system with OBS, Variable Bit Rate (VBR) services and bandwidth-on-demand.…”
