“…They include low fibre diets (Riddell, 1987), dietary biogenic amines and mycotoxins (Dorner et al, 1983;Brugh & Wilson, 1986;Stewart et al, 1986), reovirus (Page et al, 1982;Brugh & Wilson, 1986), adenovirus (Kouwenhoven et al, 1978), tumour-inducing viruses (Mussman & Twiehaus, 1971;Jackson et al, 1977;Bagust et al, 1979;Payne & Purchase, 1991;Witter, 1991), Cryptosporidium (Goodwin, 1995) and idiopathic proliferations of cells interpreted to be histiocytes (Hafher et al, 1995). The purposes of the present study were to examine proventriculi of broiler chicks for lesions, and to classify and record the incidence of these lesions.…”

“…In Australia, REV was first isolated from a duck with lymphoreticular cell tumours by Grimes and Purchase (1973). Attention was subsequently drawn to the pathogenic potential of REV in chickens when widespread losses occurred among Australian poultry flocks (Jackson et al, 1977) following the use of a commercial Marek's disease vaccine which was subsequently proven to be contaminated with REV . A recent study by Grimes et al (1979) showed that infection of young chickens with an Australian isolate of REV resulted in feathering defects and poor growth rate, haematological changes, hypoplasia of organs of the immune system and inflammation in visceral organs and the nervous system.…”

“…REV has also been implicated in necrotic dermatitis in chickens (Howell et al, 1982). Periodically, REV-infected flocks have been reported and contaminated Marek's disease vaccines were associated with outbreaks of reticuloendotheliosis in Australia (Jackson et al, 1977) and Japan (Kawamura et al, 1976). Thus, an improved diagnostic assay for REV would also facilitate flock surveillance programs and certification of vaccines.…”
