“…The mean composition of 5-3 Ma sands (Q 29 F 48 L 23 ) at Site 467 is almost identical to the mean composition of late Miocene (9-6 Ma) sandstones (Modelo Formation, Simi Fan; Fellbaum and Fritsche, 1993;Rumelhart and Ingersoll, 1997) in the Santa Monica Mountains (Q 29 F 46 L 25 ) as determined by Lane (1993). Thus, their source was similar to that of the Western Transverse Ranges.…”

“…As in the San Bernardino Mountains, we estimate average, long-term erosion rates that span the entire duration of uplift, which we assume to be ϳ6 m.y. (Rumelhart and Ingersoll, 1997;Blythe et al, 2000). Because the San Gabriel Mountains have experienced a longer period of construction, equal rates of erosion in these mountains are of course associated with more than double the total denudation than in their younger counterpart.…”

“…In contrast, the San Gabriel Mountains have experienced rapid transpressive uplift for the past 5-7 m.y. (Crowell, 1982;Dibblee, 1982a;Wright, 1991;Bull, 1991;Rumelhart and Ingersoll, 1997;Blythe et al, 2000). Perhaps most striking are the differences between their topographic expressions.…”

“…It has been documented in nearby Xinjiang Province, China, that modern sands from the Junggar, Turpan, and Tarim basins plot within arc fields on Qm-F-Lt, Qt-F-L, and Qp-LvtLsm diagrams, although they are not currently near an active arc; their source area contains uplifted, exposed Paleozoic arc deposits (Graham et al, 1993). Recent studies have also documented that global sandstone provenance fields are not always applicable to basins that receive sediment from a more localized source or a source composed of accreted terranes: sandstones from such basins plot within fields that reflect the relict tectonic setting of the source area rocks and not necessarily the tectonic setting of the source area at the time of deposition (e.g., Trop and Ridgway, 1997;Rumelhart and Ingersoll, 1997;Hendrix, 2000). Additional work on the Permian sandstones, possible local volcanic source rocks, and the basin geometries is needed to better interpret these provenance data.…”
