Zealandia is a largely submerged, continental fragment in the southwest Pacifi c, generally considered to be derived from East Gondwana, but whose origins, age, structure, and relationships with other continental masses are poorly known. To explore the development of this microcontinent, a suite of mantle xenoliths was assembled from 12 localities throughout New Zealand, an emergent part of Zealandia. The 187 Re-188 Os isotopic systematics of the xenoliths yield model ages (T RD2 ) between 0 and 2.3 Ga. Six samples from the newly defi ned Waitaha domain, South Island, have a narrow range of T RD2 ages from 1.6 to 1.9 Ga, in agreement with an aluminochron model age for this mantle domain of ca. 1.95 Ga, and with a three-point Re-Os isochron age of 2.26 ± 0.10 Ga. These ages are >500 m.y. older than T RD2 ages preserved in other regions of mantle lithosphere from the eastern margin of Gondwana (e.g., southeastern Australia and Marie Byrd Land, Antarctica) and >1 b.y. older than the oldest crustal rocks exposed in New Zealand. Thus, the lithospheric mantle of Zealandia has a complex age structure, including a region of Paleoproterozoic cratonic mantle with a minimum extent of ~45,000 km 2 . This ancient mantle resided at the margins of several supercontinents during the past ~2 b.y., attesting to the durability of subcontinental lithospheric mantle domains, even when decoupled from overlying contemporaneous crust and in an oceanic setting distanced from stable cratonic nuclei.

Different styles of modern and ancient non-collisional orogens and implications for crustal growth: a Gondwanaland perspective

Non-collisional, convergent margin orogens are generally called accretionary orogens, although there may not have been horizontal accretion across the plate boundary. We revive the term non-collisional orogen and use a Gondwanaland perspective to discuss different types. On the northern margin of the Australian Plate, the New Guinea non-collisional, accretionary orogen was formed by large-scale terrane accretion across an advancing plate margin. On the eastern margin, the Southwest Pacific Orogen is a non-collisional and non-accretionary orogen, involving virtually no horizontal transfer of material across its eastward-retreating plate boundary. In the Tasmanides, the Lachlan Orogen, commonly described as an accretionary orogen, is another non-collisional, non-accretionary orogen developed behind the plate margin after major Cambrian rollback, with resultant backarc basins filled mainly by quartz-rich turbidites subsequently recycled. The outboard New England Orogen is a non-collisional but accretionary orogen, marked by the frontal accretion of continental margin arc detritus, subsequently recycled into younger arcs. The Permian to Cretaceous Rangitata Orogen of New Zealand is an ?oblique non-collisional, accretionary orogen in which Permian-Triassic sediments of the accretionary wedge have no link with inboard (near) arc terranes. Late Jurassic to Cretaceous parts were sourced by a combination of first cycle volcanogenic detritus passing through the forearc basin together with recycling of the exhumed parts of the wedge. All non-collisional orogens involve continental growth, but only the New England Orogen and to a lesser extent the New Guinea Orogen involve significant crustal growth.

In the north, the Rakaia subterrane of the Torlesse terrane comprises a thick sequence of tectonically imbricated, weakly metamorphosed graywacke and argillites that were deposited as an accretionary complex and derived primarily from a granitic source [ Roser and Korsch , 1999; Wandres et al , 2004]. The Caples terrane is a tectonically imbricated, weakly metamorphosed sequence of marine volcanoclastic graywacke and argillites that were deposited as fan deposits in lower trench‐slope basins and on a trench floor prior to the arrival of the Rakaia subterrane [ Roser et al , 1993].…”

A Mesozoic crustal suture on the Gondwana margin in the New Zealand region

Marine crustal multichannel seismic data, recorded offshore South Island, New Zealand, are used to provide constraints on the evolution of the Gondwana margin in this region. Lower crustal and upper mantle seismic reflectivity off southeastern Stewart Island, south of South Island, is interpreted in terms of a northeast dipping paleosubduction zone. This inferred suture is considered to be related to the docking of the Brook Street oceanic island arc terrane to the Gondwana margin in the Triassic, the junction of which is now largely covered by the Median Batholith. A similar lower crustal–upper mantle feature has been imaged off western South Island. Both inferred sutures have similar strikes and are approximately collinear after restoration of the region for major Cenozoic horizontal deformation. It is proposed that they are parts of the same paleosuture that was oriented subparallel to the former Gondwana margin and to the present Paleozoic and Mesozoic terranes forming South Island.
