Protozoan Parasites of the Cane Toad, Bufo-Marinus, in Australia

Abstract: A survey of the protozoan parasites of the introduced South American cane toad, Bufo marinus, was conducted between 1983 and 1984 in Queensland. In all, 267 fully grown specimens, 7 juveniles and 115 tadpoles were checked for blood, cloaca, gall bladder and, for the tadpoles only, skin protozoans, and results are compared with records of the toad's protozoans in South America. Results show that Bufo marinus has not retained any of its native blood protozoans, and that it has introduced species of intestinal an… Show more

Infectious agents which have been identified in/with B. marinus within Australia include species of protozoa, helminths and fungi (Delvinquier 1986, Delvinquier & Freeland 1988a, b, Speare 1990, Speare et al 1994. A notable pathogen is Mucor amphibiorum .…”

“…Conversely, in the process of introduction, a species may transport a subset of its native parasites to the new range (Delvinquier & Freeland 1988;Torchin et al 2003) and become infected by local parasite faunas in their new range (Font & Tate 1994;Torchin et al 1996).…”

“…36 These studies identified numerous protozoal, bacterial, and fungal organisms associated with cane toads; however, published reports of disease in Australian cane toads are limited to occasional cases of fungal infection. 3,11,27,36,37 In this paper, we described the pathology of a newly recognized spinal arthropathy of freeranging adult cane toads and propose the etiology to involve interaction between bacterial infection and preexisting degeneration of intervertebral joints.…”
