Abstract: Human jaws and teeth display a high degree of morphological individuality as they represent personal, family and population characteristics. A protostylid is a supernumerary or accessory cusp located on the mesial half of the buccal surface on the molars that may seldom pose problems while its presence may not be a cause for alarm in most instances. “…These features, characteristics and occupational marks give an idea about the habits and cultural practices of a group of people/ethnicity. The dental characteristics such as the shovelling or scooping of the upper incisor (most common in Asiatic Mongoloids and Amerindians), taurodontism, chisel shaped incisors, Carabelli’s cusp, hypocone, and protostylid, peg shaping of the teeth can be used to determine the ethnicity of the individual [ 36 - 38 ]. According to Vij [ 8 ], Aborigines Australians, the Melanesians and the American Indians and Eskimos tend to be large toothed races with wide crowns and Lapps and Bushmen are small people with comparatively smaller teeth.…”

“…As the supernumerary molars in our case are in still follicular developing stage and patient had no discomfort or symptoms associated with supernumerary molars, hence no treatment was advised but the patient was instructed to attend for regular follow ups every six months' interval so that final path of eruption, eruption pattern, their final position in the dental arch can be evaluated. [5,6]. This structure is usually present on the buccal surface of the mesiobuccal cusp (paracone) and rarely on the distobuccal cusp (metacone).…”

“…It has been reported that the presence of protostylid in primary molars is a predilection for its presence in permanent molars. 7 In our case, the parents were unaware of the presence of such an extra cusp in the primary molar and so we could only assume regarding its presence in the primary dentition.…”
