Marine flora distribution change modelling is of high interest in order to investigate the implications of ocean warming due to climate changes. With respect to the Arctic, Greenland is a major player, but due to limited floristic data, including sporadic and difficult accessible historical data, public available data is lacking. Here is presented the Greenland macroalgal flora diversity and distribution, providing a baseline, based on historical and present knowledge, and analyse the distributional patterns within Greenland, but also in a Polar and North Atlantic perspective. Species presence and distribution in Greenland are compiled from literature and from species lists prepared by Greenland macroalgae taxonomists. Macroalgal species numbers are compiled from literature for other countries/regions represented in the North Atlantic. The data set has been analysed in a national biogeographic context, as well as in a polar macroecological perspective, using the (R + C)/P index. A total macroalgal species number of 176 species, divided into 49 Rhodophyta, 79 Phaeophyceae, and 48 Chlorophyta species, were found for Greenland, distributed along a latitudinal gradient from 60-83°N, and whereas 134 and 144 species were registered for the east and west coast, respectively. In general, a linear decline in species number from south to north was observed, as well as on the transverse transect in the northern North Atlantic, with a general higher fraction of Phaeophycean species in the north. A distributional baseline and a checklist for the Greenland macroalgal flora are provided.

Marine algal flora and community structure were seasonally examined at three sites in the vicinity of the Wolseong nuclear power plant in Korea from February to November 2006. A total of 126 seaweeds including 25 green, 31 brown, 70 red algae, and 1 marine plant were identified. The greatest number of species occurred at Jeonchonri (101 species) followed by intake (88 species) and discharge (29 species) during the study period. Of 126 seaweeds, 76 annuals and 13 warm tolerance species were recorded. Dominant species based on important value (IV > 10) were Ulva pertusa and Enteromorpha linza at intake, U. pertusa and Padina arborescens at discharge, and Sargassum horneri and Corallina pilulifera at Jeonchonri shore. Annual average biomass exhibited a wide range of variations, from 40.67g m -2 in dry weight at discharge to 133.69g m -2 at Jeonchonri. Among six functional groups, dominant group was coarsely-branched form at intake and Jeonchonri, but it was different at discharge site as filamentous form. Seaweed community structures of discharge site were distinguishable in decreasing species richness, biomass, species diversity index (H'), richness index (R), and evenness index (J'). Also, the ratios of green algae, warm tolerance species, annual algae, filamentous form and dominance index (DI) remarkably increased. Such phenomenons of discharge site are usually found under environmentally stressful conditions such as high disturbance. Thus, I can conclude that the heated effluents of nuclear power plant act as environmental stress influencing seaweed community structures and it can be detected with various community indices.

; Buccal juice of the sea hare Aplysia juliana was found to degrade algal polysaccharides. The optimal enzyme composition for protoplast preparation from Undaria pinnatifida was protein at 48 µg/ml buccal juice from sea hare, 10 mg/ml cellulase Onozuka-RS, 0.4 M NaCl, 0.8 M sorbitol, 2 mg/ml dextran sulfate sodium salt, and 1 µl/ml 2-mercaptoethanol in 10 mM MES buffer (pH 6.0). Protoplasts of Eisenia bicyclis, Endarachne binghamiae (Phaeophyta), and Ulva pertusa (Chlorophyta) could also be prepared in a similar manner. Yields of these protoplasts were about 10(7) cells per gram of fresh weight alga.
