“…Our finding concerning short‐term current PPI use and increased risk of hip fracture, is in line with previous case‐control studies conducted among general population, which all reported the slightly increased risk in current use but no significant risk in long‐term or cumulative use. In addition, the study of Adams et al, which was restricted to men only, reported the highest risk at the beginning of the treatment which is consistent with our results . The highest risk during short‐term PPI use might be explained so that PPIs are prescribed to persons with high risk for falling because of their unstable health condition.…”

“…Our study found no differences between drug substances and risk of hip fracture. Three previous studies have reported differences between drug substances . Two found an increased risk associated with omeprazole use compared to non‐use of omeprazole, and one found no significant differences …”

“…In a meta-analysis by Kwok et al [7], increased duration of PPI use was associated with higher risk ratios for fractures. Two more recent studies showed evidence for an increased fracture risk after long-term PPI use in older adults [10,37]. In contrast, a study by Soriano et al [38] showed a higher hip fracture risk after short-term PPI use, but not after long-term PPI use.…”

“…Proton pump inhibitor medications are among the most commonly used drugs in the United States today. 22 Admission to the hospital Bernardo J. Reyes, MD and Simon C. Mears, MD, PhD Typically, a patient with an acute hip fracture is unable to walk, is seen in the emergency department (ED), admitted to the hospital, and then the fracture is surgically repaired. Despite the seeming simplicity of this pathway, many roadblocks stand in the way of optimal care.…”
