Proton-proton elastic scattering at the LHC energy of \chem{\sqrt{s} = 7\,TeV}

Abstract: Proton-proton elastic scattering has been measured by the TOTEM experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at √ s = 7 TeV in dedicated runs with the Roman Pot detectors placed as close as seven times the transverse beam size (σ beam ) from the outgoing beams. After careful study of the accelerator optics and the detector alignment, |t| , the square of four-momentum transferred in the elastic scattering process, has been determined with an uncertainty of δt = 0.1 GeV |t|. In this letter, first results of the … Show more

“…4. In the former case (7 TeV) the straight line segments and the point indicate recent experimental results obtained by the TOTEM Collaboration [1,2] (see Table V): the optical point with the slope at the diffraction peak (dotted segment), the dip position (dashed vertical segment) and the value of the differential cross section at q 2 = 0.7 GeV 2 (black square). …”

“…However, beyond this region, changes of slopes are expected, as indicated by the results presented in the following section. This effect seems not to be present in the published plots by the TOTEM Collaboration [1], suggesting that other form factors should be regarded in order to describe the high-t data. We shall return to this point in the conclusions and final remarks.…”

“…The most important contribution at high energies (e.g., W 1 TeV) is clearly that from gluon-gluon scattering, parametrized [20,21] at W = 1800 GeV. Bottom dσ/dt from the TOTEM experiment [22] at W = 7000 GeV.…”

“…In order to compare with the available pp experimental data, we take σ = σ pp inel = 70 mb [23] as the transverse area of the collision. The number of strings, < N s >, can be obtained from the SFM code [24], a Monte Carlo code based on the quark gluon string model, similar to the Dual Parton Model [25] or EPOS [26].…”
