Protocol for a systematic review and thematic synthesis of patient experiences of central venous access devices in anti-cancer treatment

Abstract: BackgroundThree types of central venous access devices (CVADs)—peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs), skin-tunnelled central catheters (Hickman-type devices), and implantable chest wall Ports (Ports)—are routinely used in the intravenous administration of anti-cancer treatment. These devices avoid the need for peripheral cannulation and allow for home delivery of treatment. “…While thematic synthesis is commonly used for qualitative research outcomes, it can be used for quantitative research outcomes when there is heterogeneity in measurements. Therefore, the process of thematic synthesis was chosen to narrate the findings of this review [53]. The thematic analysis was conducted according to Braun and Clarke's guidelines: familiarisation with the data, coding, developing potential themes, reviewing themes, defining themes and reporting data relating to research questions [54].…”

“…The final outcome of the thematic synthesis will be an overall account of the factors influencing the statistical planning, design, conduct, analysis and reporting in clinical trials. Findings across articles will be synthesised and their meanings interpreted to answer the research question ( Ryan et al , 2018 ). Recommendations, where provided in the articles, will be emphasised.…”
