Protocol-developing meta-ethnography reporting guidelines (eMERGe)

Abstract: BackgroundDesigning and implementing high-quality health care services and interventions requires robustly synthesised evidence. Syntheses of qualitative research studies can provide evidence of patients’ experiences of health conditions; intervention feasibility, appropriateness and acceptability to patients; and advance understanding of health care issues. The unique, interpretive, theory-based meta-ethnography synthesis approach is suited to conveying patients’ views and developing theory to inform service … Show more

“…Synthesising the qualitative evidence of the experiences of patients and family caregivers with home palliative care services will shed light on the role of the different components of the intervention 12. Albeit challenging, the identification of these key components, together with an understanding of how they influence the experiences of patients and families, could be useful to research, by informing the design of interventions to be tested in the future.…”

“…The methods used to develop the eMERGe meta‐ethnography reporting guidance followed a rigorous approach consistent with, but exceeding, good practice recommendations (Moher, Schulz, Simera, & Altman, ) and were published in a protocol (France et al., ). The research questions were: What are the existing recommendations and guidance for conducting and reporting each process in a meta‐ethnography and why?…”

“…After the papers were read multiple times, two authors manually reviewed, line‐by‐line, the results sections to identify concepts. A meta‐ethnography technique was used for data analysis, which is a widely used approach in qualitative synthesis that is designed to summarize patient views and experiences . The goal is to produce summary interpretations and identify overarching concepts across different study settings and contexts.…”

“…The use of qualitative research has been recognized as an essential step when creating and understanding patient reported QOL, and the different qualitative methodologies have been well described . A meta‐ethnography (or meta‐synthesis) takes a body of qualitative research and analyses similarities among the studies (analogous to a traditional quantitative meta‐analysis) …”
