Proteomic Analysis of the Hemolymph After Metschnikowia bicuspidata Infection in the Chinese Mitten Crab Eriocheir sinensis

Abstract: The “milky disease” of the Chinese mitten crab, Eriocheir sinensis, is a highly lethal fungal disease caused by Metschnikowia bicuspidata infection. To elucidate the immune responses of the hemolymph of E. sinensis to M. bicuspidata infection, a comparative analysis of the hemolymph of E. sinensis infected with M. bicuspidata and that treated with phosphate buffered saline was performed using label-free quantitative proteomics. A total of 429 proteins were identified. Using a 1.5-fold change in expression as a… Show more

“…Histopathological examination, pathogen isolation, identification and laboratory challenge experiments by Bao et al (2021) confirmed that the ‘milky disease’ was caused by Metschnikowia bicuspidata . The infection rate of ‘milky disease’ in the Panjin area has increased in subsequent years, and now seriously threatens the development of the Chinese mitten crab industry (Jiang et al, 2021; Zhang et al, 2021). In the present study, we aimed to investigate the epidemic and to provide a basis for its prevention and control.…”

“…Metschnikowia bicuspidata is a pathogenic yeast that was first identified in Daphnia [21]. This pathogen can infect various economically important aquatic animals, such as P. trituberculatus, M. rosenbergii, and E. sinensis, which results in substantial economic losses to the aquaculture industry [8,16,22]. Therefore, it is important to identify the route of transmission to effectively control mycoses in these cultured species.…”

“…104 relatively rare; however, the recent occurrence of crab 'milky disease' and other issues have greatly impacted the industry and are predicted to increase in incidence. 106,107 Therefore, the industry urgently needs to conduct research on disease control and rational drug use in rice-crab coculture systems. Moreover, breeding mode in rice-crab coculture needs to be further optimized.…”

“…Automatic, intelligent and precise pesticide application technology needs to be developed and strengthened. Over the past 30 years, disease in crabs cultured in rice paddy fields has been relatively rare; however, the recent occurrence of crab ‘milky disease’ and other issues have greatly impacted the industry and are predicted to increase in incidence 106,107 …”
