Proteogenomic Study of the Effect of an Improved Mixed Diet of Live Preys on the Aquaculture of Octopus vulgaris Paralarvae

Abstract: The common octopus is the most demanded cephalopod species for human consumption. Despite important advances realized recently, the main bottleneck for commercial production of the common octopus, Octopus vulgaris, is the mass mortality of paralarvae in the first 15–20 days post-hatching (dph), with the main responsible factors still unknown. Thus, the identification of the limiting culture factors is, therefore, crucial for their aquaculture. This study investigates proteomic and transcriptomic responses of o… Show more

“…Glycolysis, the TCA cycle, the biosynthesis of nucleotide sugars, oxocarboxylic acid metabolism, and oxidative phosphorylation were the major metabolic pathways, and comparable results were obtained from previous ink gene ontology studies using DAVID and PANTHER. These metabolic networks were also identified through transcriptomics analysis in some previous studies [38][39][40]. Another significant iron soluble non-toxic protein ferritin was found in the metabolic networks of octopus ink, which is involved in the immune system and homeostasis process [41].…”

“…The common octopus is a species with great food importance, since it is a complete food with great nutritional value and it is highly appreciated. Due to the high scientific interest and high commercial value of the common octopus, several transcriptomic and proteomic studies have been published, including adult specific organs [ 21 , 22 , 23 ] and paralarvae under different growth conditions [ 24 , 25 , 26 ]. However, the biological processes of this species are still not well understood due in part to this lack of genome sequencing and accurate annotation.…”
