Protein oxidation under extremely low frequency electric field in guinea pigs. Effect of N-acetyl-L-cysteine treatment

Abstract: Abstract. Modern age exposes humans to an increasing level of electromagnetic activity in their environment due to overhead power lines and transformers around residential areas. Studies have shown that treatment with antioxidants can suppress the oxidative damage induced by electromagnetic fields in various frequencies of the non-ionizing radiation band. In this study, we detected protein carbonyl content (PCO), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) in liver and 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT) levels in plasma of… Show more

“…These observations were confirmed with statistical analysis of optical density of PAS reaction (Table 1). Similar increase in PAS reaction was observed after EMFs exposure in different tissues [23][24][25][26] and explained by actual mucous transformation indicative of adaptive change taken by serous acini in response to the stressful effect induced by the EMFs with increased secretion of cortisol and accumulation of glycogen in the cells. This finding was confirmed by electron microscope finding of multiple electron lucent secretory granules in ELF-MF exposed group (Figure 3 B).…”

“…These metabolites were injurious to other cells and their release was chemotactic for other cells as neutrophils or to lymphocytes. In addition, oxidative stress stimulates the expression of genes involved in collagen biosynthesis [25].…”

“…Whether this effect is occurring by a mechanism involving interference on Ca ++ signaling or calcineurin phosphatase activity as in the case of the well-known NFAT inhibitors CsA and Tacrolimus (Kiani et al, 2000; Martinez-Martinez and Redondo, 2004), remains to be elucidated. Besides, NFAT activation plays a promoting role in cancer (Duque et al, 2005; Viola et al, 2005; Gachet and Ghysdael, 2009). Thus, it is tempting to speculate that some of the effects of σ-2 agonists on cancer may take place though NFAT inhibition.…”
