Protein-losing enteropathy in paracoccidioidomycosis identified by scintigraphy: report of three cases

Abstract: Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) or South American Blastomycosis is a systemic fungal infection caused by a dimorphic fungus, Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. It represents the most important systemic mycosis in South America and with higher prevalence among male inhabitants of the rural area. PCM usually affects the lungs, and rarely the intestines. The authors report three cases of PCM, treated at the University Hospital of Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul whose scintigraphy with technetium-99 labeled hu… Show more

“…This condition is caused by dimorphic fungi of the genus Paracoccidioides, especially in rainy regions, with acidic and moist soil conditions 3 . Contact with the fungus is possible through transmission by inhalation, generally with predominantly pulmonary infection 4 . For the disease to develop, a transformation from the micellar form of the agent to its yeast-like pathogenic presentation takes place, which occurs at a temperature of 35 to 37°C 3 .…”

“…The fungus can spread from the lungs to other organs and tissues via lymphatic and hematogenic pathways . In the acute phase, the disease progresses more rapidly and clinical diagnosis is more difficult . Hepatosplenomegaly is a common occurrence in the acute phase with occurrence of granulomas, areas of necrosis and yeasts internalized in macrophages as observed in mice liver during the first weeks of infection .…”
