Protein-Lipid Relationships in Human Plasma. III. In Pregnancy and the Newborn1

Abstract: This study of pregnant women and their newborn infants was undertaken as a part of a more extensive investigation of factors that modify the interrelations of proteins and lipids in human plasma (1-3).The composition of maternal and fetal blood has been examined by many observers who, however, have usually focussed attention either on proteins or lipids. Electrophoretic studies of proteins have been made by Longsworth, Curtis, and Pembroke (4) who analyzed both serum and plasma; by Lagercrantz (5) and Moore, D… Show more

“…In confirmation of earlier reports (13,33), SPI's in maternal and cord blood, although not identical, were not, in the present study, significantly different. A free passage of all proteins between maternal and fetal circulations is unlikely, since with the exception of gamma globulin, the electrophoretic components of serum obtained from cord blood resemble those of the non-pregnant adult more nearly than those of the mother (34). Nevertheless, it has been demonstrated that various gamma globulins pass from the maternal to the fetal circulation (35).…”

“…Pierce and Gofman (6) examined the sera of thirty-two patients with cirrhosis and found levels of the Sf 10-20 class slightly higher than normal. They also studied forty-eight cases of acute hepatitis (7) and found elevations of the Sf 0-100 components with the largest increase in the Sf [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20] class. The increased concentrations correlated most closely with the presence of jaundice and tended to decrease when the jaundice subsided.…”
