The present study was designed to investigate protective effects of quercetin against bisphenol A (BPA) induced testicular toxicity in male Sprague Dawley rats. Twenty adult male rats were divided into four groups. The first group served as the control and was provided with normal saline. The second group of rats was treated with 50 mg/kg of BPA dissolved in alcoholic saline. The third group received oral gavage of 50 mg/kg quercetin while the fourth group was treated with quercetin (50 mg/kg) along with BPA (50 mg/kg). All of the treatments were carried out for 52 days. Testicular tissues and epididymis were used for histology while blood plasma was used for hormonal and biochemical analysis. BPA administration resulted in a significant reduction in seminiferous tubule diameter and epithelial height with impaired spermatogenesis. Quercetin treatment resulted in restoration of spermatogenesis and reversal of histological damage. In addition, BPA treatment significantly reduced (p < 0.05) plasma testosterone level (ng/ml) while estrogen was not affected. Similarly, BPA caused a significant alteration in the lipid profile. Interestingly, quercetin treatment led to a marked increase in plasma testosterone, decrease in estrogen concentration, as well as a normalized lipid profile. In conclusion, results indicated that BPA administration induces toxic effects on testis and epididymis, impairs spermatogenesis, with an imbalance in hormonal levels and lipid profile while quercetin amended these toxic effects by restoring normal spermatogenesis, testicular tissue damage, and hormonal levels. This suggests that quercetin may be a potential therapeutic against BPA induced testicular toxicity. ARTICLE HISTORY

The current study was designed to evaluate the pharmacologic effects of three novel cysteine-containing compounds: S-propyl-l-cysteine (SPC), S-allyl-l-cysteine (SAC), and S-propargyl-l-cysteine (SPRC) on H 2 S production and antioxidant defenses in an acute myocardial infarction (MI) rat model. The enzymatic activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), as well as glutathione redox status and malonaldehyde (MDA) content, also were determined. All three compounds were found to preserve SOD and GPx activities and also tissue GSH levels while reducing the formation of the lipid peroxidation product MDA in ventricular tissues. With immunfluorescence assays, we observed the expression of CSE and Mn-SOD. The morphologic changes of the cardiac cells are seen with both light and electron microscopy. The corresponding pathologic alterations were characterized mainly as loss of adherence between cardiac myocytes and swollen or ruptured mitochondria at the ultrastructural level. Propargylglycine, a selective inhibitor of CSE, abolished the protective effects of each compound used in the current model. Our study provides novel evidence that SPC, SAC, and SPRC have cardioprotective effects in MI by reducing the deleterious effects of oxidative stress by modulating the endogenous levels of H 2 S and preserving the activities of antioxidant defensive enzymes like SOD.

Background: The rate of lead poisoning has decreased in recent years due to increased health control in industries that use this metal. However, it is still a public health problem worldwide. The use of various plants with chelating properties has been a topic of research today. In traditional medicine, it is said that Coriandrum sativum has chelating properties, but there is no scientific evidence to support this fact. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the chelating effect of methanol extract of coriander and its fractions on Wistar rats intoxicated with lead. Materials and Methods: In this research, male Wistar rats were poisoned with 50 mg/kg of lead acetate and treated with 50 mg/kg of methanol extract and its fractions. The extract and its fractions were administered to four treatment groups. Positive and negative controls were established. Hemoglobin, hematocrit and lead concentrations were analyzed; liver was evaluated histologically in control and treatment groups. Results: The methanol extract of coriander presented a LD 50 ˃1000 mg/dL. The group administered with the methanol extract showed significant difference in the levels of hemoglobin and hematocrit compared to the negative control group. Lead concentration in treatment groups showed a decrease compared to the positive control. Histological evaluation of tissue showed less damage in groups administered with methanolic extract and its fractions compared to the positive control which presented structural alterations. Conclusion: Coriander extracts protect liver and lower lead concentration in rats intoxicated with lead in contrast to the positive control group.
