Protective role of β-sitosterol or gibberellic acid to Lycopersicum esculentum cultivars under temperature stress

Abstract: T HIS STUDY investigate the efficacy of β-sitosterol (10-3, 10-5 and 10-7 molar) or gibberellic acid (100ppm) on alleviating harmful effects of temperature stress (10 o C and 45 o C) on three cultivars of Lycopersicum esculentum Mill., mainly Fayrouz, Aziza and N23-48 to the purpose the activities of some antioxidant enzymes, protein patterns and DNA finger print in order to focus on the role of β-sitosterol or gibberellic acid for enhancing plant tolerance against temperature stress. It was found that, temper… Show more

“…In this regard, researchers emphasized that because Na + ions prevent the absorption of K + ions, the reduction in K + concentration during stress is caused by the buildup of Na + ions. In addition, it is claimed that the K + ion is crucial for osmotic adjustment, especially in aged leaves (Haroun 2002;Khan et al 2022). These findings support those of Grewal (2010), who found that the decline in soil salinity levels negatively impacted the K + /Na + ratio of wheat leaves and chickpeas.…”

“…In this aspect, MDA was reduced, and CAT, GPX, and APX were increased in a dose-dependent manner [162]. In the same way, the application of GA (100 ppm) significantly improves CAT and PRX during treatments of tomato seedlings at low (10 • C) and high (45 • C) temperatures [163]. On the other hand, some reductions in metabolic (transpiration) and physiological (plant growth, stomatal closure, xylem vessel proliferation, and expansion) processes were observed in tomato GA biosynthesis deficient mutants exposed to drought conditions [164,165].…”

“…In another study with pea plants, copper induced oxidative stress was mitigated by the application of PBRs including GA 3 by decreasing protein oxidation and lipoperoxidation via increased antioxidant enzyme activities. Furthermore, exogenously applied GA increased antioxidant activities in Solanum lycopersicum which in turn improved its tolerance to high temperature(Haroun et al 2018). In another study, ascorbic acid and GA 3 applications to…”
