Protective Efficiency of ZrO2/Chitosan “Sandwich” Coatings on Galvanized Low-Carbon Steel

Abstract: Enhanced corrosion efficiency of low-carbon steel was achieved by newly developed hybrid multilayers, composed of low-carbon steel coated with an electrodeposited zinc sublayer (1 µm), a chitosan (CS) middle layer and ZrO2 coating by the sol–gel method (top-layer). The middle chitosan layer was obtained by dipping galvanized steel substrate in 3% tartatic acid water solution of medium molecular-weight chitosan, composed of β-(1–4)-linked D-glucosamine and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine with a deacetylation degree of a… Show more

“…[210] Sandwich type coating containing chitosan as middle layer and ZrO2 top layer for galvanised CS has sacrificial nature for corrosion protection. [211] Incorporation of maltodextrin, a water soluble and high molecular weight polymer along with chitosan in coating helps in more surface coverage. [212] Low water solubility of chitosan can be improved by sulphonation increases corrosion inhibition by remarkably increasing delay in cloud point and methane hydrate formation.…”

“…Zirconium dioxide (ZrO 2 ) is material having excellent physico-chemical properties: good thermal stability, high strength, abrasion/corrosion and chemical resistance, antibacterial properties and ionic conductivity. These properties make it suitable for a variety of industrial and medical applications [1,2]. Zirconium oxide ceramics have often been choosen for joining ceramic and steel, due to its remarkably high thermal expansion.…”
