This study aimed to investigate the hepatoprotective effect of Luteolin (Lut) on Cadmium (Cd)-induced liver injury in mice. A total of 60 4-week-old male Kunming mice were randomly assigned into six groups. The mice in four groups were orally gavaged with CdCl2 (5 mg/kg b.w.) and Lut (25, 50, or 100 mg/kg) for 14 days. The results showed that Lut treatment restored body weight, liver index, liver structure and serum hepatotoxicity markers in mice compared with the Cd group. It also alleviated Cd-induced oxidative stress by restoring relevant antioxidant indices and up-regulating the expression of Nrf2 pathway-related proteins. Furthermore, Lut suppressed the mRNA expression of some inflammatory factors and the expression of NLRP3 inflammasome-associated proteins. In addition, Lut alleviated Cd-induced apoptosis by reducing hepatic apoptotic cells and reversing the expression of mitochondrial apoptotic pathway-related proteins. These results suggest that Lut treatment attenuates Cd-induced liver injury by stimulating the Nrf2 pathway and inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasome and apoptosis.

The present study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary lycopene (LYC) supplementation on the growth performance, meat quality, and antioxidant capacity of breast muscle in aflatoxin B1 (AFB1)‐challenged broilers. A total of 192 1‐day‐old healthy Arbor Acres broilers were randomly assigned to 3 treatments, each with 8 replicates (8 broilers per replicate). The broilers of the three treatments were fed a basal diet (control), a basal diet supplemented with 100 µg/kg AFB1 (CA), and a basal diet supplemented with 100 µg/kg AFB1 and 200 mg/kg LYC (CAL). The results demonstrated that the AFB1 diet increased the feed‐to‐gain (F/G) ratio (p < 0.05), yellowness and shear force of breast muscle (p < 0.05), and protein carbonyl (PC) content (p < 0.05) while decreasing the average daily gain (ADG) (p < 0.05), redness of breast muscle (p < 0.05), glutathione peroxidase activity (p < 0.05), and ability to clear OH· from breast muscle (p < 0.05) in comparison to the control group. Dietary LYC supplementation significantly decreased the F/G ratio (p < 0.05), yellowness and shear force (p < 0.05), and the content of PC and hydrogen peroxide (p < 0.05) while significantly increasing the ADG (p < 0.05), redness of breast muscle (p < 0.05), and ability of breast muscle to clear ABTS·+ (p < 0.05) compared to the CA diet. In conclusion, LYC can alleviate the negative impacts of AFB1 on the growth performance, meat quality, and antioxidant capacity of breast muscle in broilers.Practical ApplicationLYC, as a popular antioxidant, is beneficial to the growth and health of animals. The detailed application effects are still being investigated. In this study, by adding LYC to an AFB1‐contaminated diet, it was found that LYC could alleviate the adverse effects of AFB1 on the growth performance, meat quality, and muscle antioxidant capacity of broilers. These findings can provide a reference for the application of LYC and similar plant‐derived materials in animal production.

Aims: The current review aims to outline and summarize the latest research on aflatoxin, with research studies describing natural, herbal and chemical compound applications in animal (pig) models and in vitro cellular studies. Aflatoxin, a carcinogenic toxin metabolite, is produced by Aspergillus flavus in humid environments, posing a threat to human health and crop production. The current treatment involves the prevention of exposure to aflatoxin and counteracting its harmful toxic effects, enabling survival and research studies on an antidote for aflatoxin. Objectives: To summarize current research prospects and to outline the influence of aflatoxin on animal forage in farm production, food and crop processing. The research application of remedies to treat aflatoxin is undergoing development to pinpoint biochemical pathways responsible for aflatoxin effects transmission and actions of treatment. Significance: To underline the environmental stress of aflatoxin on meat and dairy products; to describe clinical syndromes associated with aflatoxicosis on human health that are counteracted with proposed treatment and preventive interventions. To understand how to improve the health of farm animals with feed conditions.
