Protective Efficacy of Lambda-Cyhalothrin Treated Nets in Anopheles Gambiae Pyrethroid Resistance Areas of Côte D’ivoire

Abstract: The efficacy of nets treated with lambda-cyhalothrin, a pyrethroid insecticide, on malaria infection and disease was assessed for the first time at the community level in Anopheles gambiae pyrethroid resistance areas. The study was carried out in northern Côte d'Ivoire, which is an area of kdr resistance. Four pairs of villages were selected and matched according to demographic, sociological, and ecological criteria. Among each pair, a village was randomly allocated to receive mosquito nets. More than 80% of b… Show more

“…7 Until now, there was no evidence to support the fact that pyrethroid resistance reduced the effectiveness of LLIN for controlling malaria at an operational level. 8 However, comparative experimental hut trials of lambdacyalothrin as ITN and IRS treatments in the coastal area of Benin, Ladji and Malanville in the north, indicated a major loss of efficacy associated with pyrethroid resistance in Anopheles gambiae Giles at Ladji, Benin. Carbamates (CARs) and organophosphates (OPs) are considered as promising alternatives to pyrethroids for vector control.…”

“…However, an overall conclusion is that kdr status alone did not operationally reduce the effectiveness of pyrethroid IRS. Similarly a multivillage randomized control trial in Cote d'Ivoire showed that pyrethroid-treated LLIN efficacy was not adversely affected by kdr (20), although a study in Senegal suggested kdr had an effect on increased malaria transmission (21). (5) appeared to confirm a lack of effectiveness of the pyrethroid spray round.…”

“…gambiae s.s. [40,165]. In Côte d'Ivoire, ITN-randomised controlled trials demonstrated a significant reduction on the entomological inoculation rate (55%) [166] and on malaria incidence in children <5 (56%) [167] despite the presence of kdr-based pyrethroid resistance.…”
