Protective Effects of the Hydroalcoholic Extract of Capparis spinosa L. Against Cyclophosphamide-Induced Nephrotoxicity in Mice

Abstract: Background: Cyclophosphamide (CP) is one of the most popular alkylating anticancer drugs despite its toxic side effects, including nephrotoxicity, hematotoxicity, mutagenicity, and immunotoxicity. Capparis spinosa is a multipurpose plant that contains a number of chemically active and diverse secondary metabolites, particularly flavonoids. Rutin and quercetin are two major flavonoids in the caper plant. Objectives: This study was undertaken to investigate the protective effect of Capparis spinosa L. extract on… Show more

“…Moreover, treatment with hesperidin kidneys showed normal renal glomeruli and renal tubules in preventive group and congestion of the peritubular blood capilleries in therapeutic group. Also , treatment with rutin kidneys showed normal renal glomeruli and renal tubules in preventive group And in therapeutic group kidneys showed congestion of the interstitial blood vessel . Our result agreement with study indicate that the hydroalcoholic extract of C. spinosa has protective effects against CP-induced nephrotoxicity in mice [95] . Hesperidin treatment showed renoprotective effect against gentamicin and this effect may be due to its antioxidant properties [96] .…”

“…The administered HPO had a nephrotoxic effect on the kidney evidenced by the prominent increases in serum levels of urea, uric acid and creatinine in the present study. The kidneys play a key role in the excretion of metabolites, regulation of extracellular fluid volume, electrolyte composition and acid-base balance (Kalantar et al, 2016). Toxic influences on the kidneys may compromise these functions, resulting in waste accumulation in circulation.…”

“…In the kidneys, cyclophosphamide (CP) generation of inflammatory mediators, nitric oxide, growth factors, and cytokines, which play an important role in cellular stress response, are considerable (21). An oxidative stress was formulated from a disturbance between the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and their elimination through antioxidant systems.…”
