Protective Effects of Glucosamine on Oxidative-Stress and Ischemia/Reperfusion-Induced Retinal Injury

Abstract: Glucosamine treatment provides multiple levels of retinal protection, including antiapoptotic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidative benefits. More research on the role of GlcN as a potential agent for the prevention and treatment of glaucoma is warranted.

“…These results were identity and confirming the findings of some investigators [9], who reported that glucosamine has accelerated the process of wound healing, re-epithelization and the tissue regeneration rate. Preservation of the histological structures with glucosamine is explained by some investigators [8,10,29] stated that glucosamine possesses an immune-modulatory influence by decreasing inflammation, neutrophil recruitment through the down regulation of inflammatory factors as TNF-α, IL-1, and IL-6. Moreover, GlcN increases the antioxidant activity owing to its constituents such as flavonoids, phenols, Tannis (Phenolic compounds) and Triterpenoids.…”

“…Moreover, GlcN increases the antioxidant activity owing to its constituents such as flavonoids, phenols, Tannis (Phenolic compounds) and Triterpenoids. Also, it prevents DNA damage and reduces apoptosis and accelerates the cellular growth and proliferation in vitro [10,[29][30][31].…”

“…Moreover, Jensen et al suggested that the protective effects of remote ischemic (RIPC) and ischemic preconditioning (IPC) are due to increased circulating GlcNAc levels and O-GlcNAcylation, as well [10]. The positive effects of the HP do not appear to be limited to the heart since GlcNAc administration before and especially after ischemia of the eye has been shown to mediate retinal cell survival [11]. …”
