Protective effects of Cornus mas fruit extract on carbon tetrachloride induced nephrotoxicity in rats

Abstract: Oxidative damage is implicated in the pathogenesis of kidney injury. Cornus mas is used for in renal aliments traditionally in Iran. The present study was aimed to investigate the antioxidant activity of C. mas fruit extract (CMFE) on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) treated oxidative stress in Wistar albino rats. Forty two male albino rats were divided into seven groups. Group I served as a sham; Group II served as a normal control; Group III served as a toxic control, with CCl4 (1 ml/kg body weight; 80% in olive … Show more

“…Similar reports concerning C officinalis are also published (Lee N. H. et al, 2012 ). The protective effect on kidneys is described for both species using comparable animal experimental settings (Yokozawa et al, 2008 ; Jiang et al, 2012 ; Abbasi et al, 2014 ; Es Haghi et al, 2014 ). In particular, the iridoids [loganin ( 1 ) and morroniside ( 8 )] present mainly in the fruits of C. officinalis as well as 7- O -galloyl-D-sedoheptulose ( 120 ) are able to prevent renal damage in diabetic rats (Xu et al, 2006 ; Park et al, 2012a ).…”

“…[56]. In the kidney injury induced by an injection of carbon tetrachloride, Banihabib et al [8] observed the decrease of antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, catalase, and GPx) and impairment of renal functions (increased serum creatinine, urea, and uric acid and decreased albumin). Treatment of rats with different doses of CC fruit extract (300 and 700 mg/kg) significantly ameliorated the alterations induced with carbon tetrachloride in lipid peroxidation, antioxidant defences, and biochemical and renal lesions.…”

“…Corni Fructus has been used to treat various diseases, including vertigo, tinnitus, cardiovascular disease, frequent urination, oxidative stress, and acute myocardial ischemia [ 3 , 5 , 11 ]. Moreover, it also can regulate the immune system [ 12 14 ]. Studies have increasingly discovered the natural constituents present in C .…”
