The aim of this study was to determine the chemical constituents, antimicrobial, cytotoxicity, mutagenic and anti-mutagenic activities of the essential oil of Artemisia ciniformis Krasch. & Popov ex Poljakov, against important bacterial pathogens and human cells which were unknown before. In-vitro cytotoxicity was measured using a modified MTT assay on normal human lymphocytes and tumor HeLa cells. The mutagenic and antimutagenic activities of the oil were evaluated using the Salmonella typhimurium tester strains TA98 and TA100, together with nitrofluorene for TA98 and sodium azide for TA100 without (-S9) metabolic activation, and 2-aminoantracene for TA98 and TA100 with metabolic (+S9) activation. Oxygenated monoterpenes especially camphor (30.21%), 1,8-cineole (23.7%) and trans-Pinocarveol (12.28%) were the major components of the oil of A. ciniformis. Bactericidal kinetics of this oil indicated that Acinetobacter baumannii is the most vulnerable one (MIC = 0.02 mg/mL, MBC = 0.04 mg/mL, Dvalue = 3.57 min). The oil displayed an excellent cytotoxic action toward the human tumor cell line (IC50 = 19.64 µg/mL). The oil of A. ciniformis showed excellent antimutagenicity effect on the 2-nitrofluorene, in the strain of S. typhimurium TA98, without the presence of metabolic activation.

There is a renewed interest in non-nutritive bioactive compounds of foods and beverages as ‘lifespan nutrients’ in the risk reduction of non-communicable diseases. Herbal beverages, consumed as part of a balanced diet, may improve the antioxidant status and enhance the overall health status. Herbal teas/beverages are rich sources of natural bioactive compounds such as carotenoids, phenolic acids, flavonoids, coumarins, alkaloids, polyacetylenes, saponins and terpenoids, among others. A wealth of available scientific evidence demonstrates that natural bioactive compounds render a number of diversified biological effects, such as antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, antiinflammatory, antiallergic, antithrombotic and vasodilatory actions, as well as antimutagenicity, anticarcinogenicity and antiaging effects. A number of herbal beverages are consumed globally and some beverages have gained more popularity than others depending on their geographical origin. However, in the era of globalization, ethnic barriers have gradually been removed and such commodities although from different areas, are now universally available as international health-pro products.

O uso das plantas medicinais está amplamente difundido, entretanto sua utilização com fins terapêuticos deve atender a critérios de qualidade, segurança e eficácia. A contaminação por micro-organismos pode impedir o atendimento destes critérios. A atividade biológica de algumas plantas tem sido frequente alvo de investigação devido ao comprovado espectro de atividade inibitória que apresentam sobre diversas bactérias. As infecções relacionadas à assistência à saúde (IRAS) representam um importante problema de saúde pública e medidas de controle se fazem necessárias para evitar o crescente aumento da resistência microbiana e suas implicações e riscos na vida dos usuários dos serviços de saúde. Este estudo avaliou a qualidade de amostras comerciais de Mentha piperita L. (hortelã-pimenta) através de análises de pureza da planta e de micro-organismos indicadores e patogênicos, além de testar a atividade antibacteriana de extratos da planta. Os valores médios encontrados para matérias estranhas, umidade e cinzas foram de 18,21%, 44,46% e 10,75%, respectivamente. As contagens de micro-organismos aeróbios viáveis, de bolores e leveduras e a pesquisa de Escherichia coli, Salmonella sp., Staphylococcus aureus e Pseudomonas aeruginosa indicaram que a maioria das amostras (80%) não atendia aos parâmetros estabelecidos pela legislação. Os resultados de qualidade encontrados para a hortelã-pimenta são um indicativo da precariedade na comercialização de plantas medicinais no Brasil e pressupõem a urgência na implantação de programas de farmacovigilância. Os extratos com atividades antibacterianas mais expressivas foram os brutos etanólicos, inibindo aproximadamente 91% das bactérias testadas, indicando a possibilidade de uso da hortelã-pimenta no controle dos micro-organismos testados.
