Protective effects of aloe vera gel (aloe baberdensis Miller) on aluminum chloride-induced reproductive toxicity in male Wistar rats

Abstract: Objective: This study aims at investigating the protective effects of aloe vera gel on aluminum chloride-induced testicular toxicity of adult Wistar rats. Methods: Twenty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups (A, B, C, and D) with five animals per group. Group A serves as the control group and received distilled water (1ml/Kg). Group B received distilled water (1ml/Kg) with 100mg/kg b.wt of aluminum chloride daily. Group C received 100mg/kg b.wt of alu… Show more

“…Exposure to AlCl 3 led to significant distortion of the testicular architecture, as previously reported by Pandey and Jain (2013) and Nuhair (2015) in AlCl 3 -exposed animals and confirmed by Khafaga (2017) and Akinola et al (2021). Guo et al (2006) and Berihu (2015) stated that these changes were due to excessive Al deposition in rat sera, testis, and epididymis.…”

“…The effects of vitamin C against aluminum chloride toxicity include ameliorated histopathological and sperm parameters, namely counts, concentration, morphology, and motility (increased fast progressive motility and decreased slow progressive motility). Additionally, vitamin C increased SOD activity while decreasing NO activity [65]. Vitamin C co-administration against mercuric chloride toxicity improved histopathological findings, daily sperm production parameters, and final body weight compared to the group treated for mercuric chloride only.…”

“…Given this fact, the treatment of locusts with PAE could sustain the integrity of sperms against the adverse effects of Al 2 O 3 NPs, and we could therefore presume that the behavior of sperms would return to normal with regard to motility and the fertilization process accordingly. In a similar fashion, different plant extracts, such as curcumin [ 59 ] and Aloe vera gel [ 60 ], exhibited ameliorative and protective effects against the Al- and AlCl 3 -induced reproductive toxicity of Wistar rats. This research raised many questions in need of further investigation.…”
