Protective Effect of Vitamins C and E on Depot-Medroxyprogesterone Acetate-Induced Ovarian Oxidative Stress In Vivo

Abstract: A study was designed to investigate ameliorates effect of combined vitamins C and E able to against depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate- (DMPA-) induced ovarian oxidative stress in rat. Twenty-five female Wistar rats were divided into the following groups (n = 5 rats each): control (untreated) (C); depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA); DMPA plus green vitamin C (at dose of 0.2 mg/gram; 0.4 mg/gram; 0.8 mg/gram) and vitamin E (0.04 IU/gram). The treatment with combined vitamins C and E was performed for four … Show more

“…This study confirms that folliculogenesis can be influenced by xenobiotics, including DMPA 18,19 . Our study expands previous findings that monkeys treated with progestin would undergo apoptosis of ovarian epithelial cells relative to the control group and administration of ethinyl estradiol7 or changes in oxidative stress as the basic mechanisms of cellular apoptosis 20 .…”

“…Although the antioxidant status and markers of oxidative stress were not assessed in this study, DMPA is known to induce ovarian oxidative stress [20]. A study to determine the protective effect of vitamins C and E on DMPA-induced ovarian oxidative stress in vivo, found elevated levels of malondialdehyde and reduced level of superoxide dismutase in DMPA users when compared to the control group [20].…”

“…It is evident that augmentation of the antioxidant defense mechanism has a protective role in renal ischemic tissue [22][23][24][25]. Vitamin C, a natural water-soluble antioxidant, has the potential to intervene in the development of cardiovascular disease by modulating redox steps [26]. Vitamin C could react rapidly with O 2 -to play an antioxidant role in cytosol and extracellular matrix.…”
