Protective effect of the apo ɛ2 allele in major depressive disorder in Taiwanese

Abstract: The apo epsilon4 allele was not associated with MDD in this study. However, the finding of a lower frequency of the apo epsilon2 allele in MDD could lead to the conclusion that the apo epsilon2 allele likely provides a protective effect against MDD in the Taiwanese population.

“…One study [66] indicated that the Apo 2 allele was likely to have a protective effect against major depressive disorder in Chinese, and other studies suggest PLA2 is associated with the treatment of bipolar disorder [72,73] . Thus, Apo E and PLA2 may have an association with depressive and bipolar disorders that warrant exploration.…”

“…Other studies, however, observe no relationship among depression and ApoE ε4 [13,14]. Conversely, there may be a protective affect of the ApoE ε2 allele in major depression: the ApoE ε2 allelic frequency in major depressive disorder (MDD) has been observed to be significantly lower than that among healthy controls [15]; among patients with severe depression, the presence of an ApoE ε2 allele appeared to predict a positive response to electro-convulsive therapy [16,17]. …”

“…25 In the present study, the frequency of ApoE-"2 in depressive subjects is only 7.5% (10 + 12/72 + 75), significantly lower than that in the non-depressive subjects (25.2%, 30 + 32/74 + 67). The reasons are probably that ApoE-"2 might reduce the incidence of depression and protect the Chinese population from depression, 26 and also may decrease the vulnerability to depressive symptoms. As it is well-known, lipid metabolism could be affected by the frequency of ApoE.…”
