Protective effect of sesquiterpene lactone parthenolide on LPS-induced acute lung injury

Abstract: Acute lung injury (ALI) is a respiratory failure disease and the major source of mortality in the critically ill patients. The main pathological changes involved in ALI include the excessive recruitment and activation of neutrophils by increased pro-inflammatory mediators. However, any specific therapy for ALI has not been developed. The objective of this study was to investigate protective effects of parthenolide, a sesquiterpene lactone produced in feverfew, on LPS-induced lung injury. In the present study, … Show more

“…LPS is an important component of the cell wall of Gram‐negative Bacillus spp. LPS triggers similar pathological processes to those observed in ALI . Neutrophil accumulation results in the production of reactive oxygen species and granular enzymes, leading to lung tissue damage via induction of an inflammatory cascade .…”

“…Lung volume reduction, lung ventilation/blood imbalance, and even progressive hypoxia and respiratory distress are observed during ALI. LPS causes similar pathological process of ALI and is widely used to induce ALI [10]. In the present study, we employed LPS-induced ALI model to show that GAA and Dex significantly decreased lung W/D weight ratio, MPO activity, MDA content and the levels of TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6, while increased SOD activity in LPS-stimulated mice.…”

“…For asthma in infants and children, an important high-risk factor for its aggravation is the common virus invasion of various respiratory tracts, which aggravates inflammation [ 17 ]. The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most infectious disease.…”
