Protective effect of Sam-Hwang-Sa-Sim-Tang against hepatic steatosis in mice fed a high-cholesterol diet

Abstract: Background: Sam-Hwang-Sa-Sim-Tang (SHSST) is a traditional Oriental medication that has been commonly used in Korea for the treatment of hypertension, insomnia, and chest pain. In addition, some studies reported that administration of SHSST results suppression of hyperlipidemia in rats or lowering lipid plasma level such as total cholesterol (TC). Those results made us find and demonstrate positive effect of SHSST much more. The aim of the current study was to examine whether SHSST exerts an effect against hep… Show more

“…In the liver, we found that animals that were fed with high-cholesterol diets exert conspicuous steatosis and elevated triglycerides. These overall findings agree with previous results showing that SHSST protects against liver steatosis and protects vessels against inflammation arising from the excessive ingestion of cholesterol 37 . The authors of these previous studies believe that hypercholesterolemia should be considered as a risk factor for hepatic fibrosis, in addition to atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease 38 .…”

“…However, no clinically effective therapeutic agents for the treatment of NAFLD are currently available [38]. Recent studies have reported that many herbal medicines for the treatment of NAFLD tend to use multiple herbs in complex formulations, owing to multitargeting and multifunctional properties, complementary interactions, and synergistic effects demonstrating better or enhanced efficacies over treatment with individual herbs [39][40][41].…”
