Protective Effect of Melatonin on Damage in the Sperm Parameters of Mice Exposed to Diazinon

Abstract: SUMMARY:Since normal sperm parameters can be altered by organophosphorous pesticides, this study intended to determine if melatonin is able to prevent the damage on sperm quality after an acute exposure to diazinon. Adult male mice were injected intraperitoneally with melatonin, diazinon (1/3 or 2/3 LD50) or both, and sperm parameters were evaluated on days 1 or 32 post injection. Groups treated with diazinon showed elevated lipid peroxidation levels on day 1 post treatment, while groups pretreated with melato… Show more

“…Indicating that there was a significant enhancement in the Total Antioxidant Activity (TAC) of the cryopreserved buffalo semen treated with 0.1mM of melatonin by increasing its active enzymes that compete the free radicles (ROS) and this was reflected by decreasing the level of lipid peroxidation in buffalo sperm cells that was characterized naturally by high level of unsaturated fatty acids. This result came in agreement with Sarabia et al (2011) and Hardeland et al (2011) who reported that melatonin has powerful ability to purify peroxide radicals (ROO-) and consequently lipid peroxidation.…”

“…Moreover, MLT reduced MDA as marker of lipid peroxidation. In line with our results, Sarabia et al [ 42 ] showed that rats treated with MLT (10 mg/kg) and diazinon have lower concentration of MDA. It was also shown that coadministration of MLT with cadmium during the prenatal and postnatal period increases the activity of CAT and superoxide dismutase enzymes and decreases the concentration of MDA compared to the cadmium group [ 43 ].…”

“…Our results showed that chicory extract was able to exert an effect over the damage, induced by an exposure to the DZ, on all the analyzed parameters of mice sperm. The present results are consistent with those of other researchers who investigated the effect of DZ on sperm parameters [22][23][24][25]11]. DZ damages sperm chromatin through phosphorylation of protamine in nucleus and so it has a negative effect on the male reproductive system [26].…”
