“…45 The weight of the inflamed colonic tissue is considered as a reliable and sensitive indicator for the severity, extent of intestinal inflammation, over production of TNF α, IL-1β and IL-6 on intrarectal administration of acetic acid. 46,47,48,49 Consistent with this notion, the results of this study revealed, acetic acid treated rats was showed significant increase colon weight and macroscopic damage score, indicative of formation of ulcers, edema and increases inflammatory cytokines levels such as TNF α, IL-1β and IL-6. Pretreatment with TRP 1 in acetic acid induced colitis significantly reduced the weight of inflamed colon weight, macroscopic damage compare with colitis rats and reverse elevated TNF α, IL-1β and IL-6 levels and prevent epithelial damage indicating its protective effect from ulcerative colitis.…”

“…Haematoxylin and eosin staining was performed using paraffin sections. The histological score (HS) was determined by microscopically under a light microscope (Olympus Corp., Tokyo, Japan) examining stained paraffin sections using the scoring criteria of colonic histological activity index (2123). Each sample was randomly selected from five perspectives to calculate the total score (0–10 points), including the infiltration degree of inflammatory cells, ulcers and lesion level (Table I).…”

“…Ginger essential oil (rich in ar-curcumene) has also shown anti-inflammatory properties through affecting leukocyte migration both in vitro and in vivo (de Melo et al, 2011). The volatile oil of Zingiber officinale with zingiberene, ar-curcumene, β-bisabolene and α-sesquiphellandrene as the major components, has shown to be effective in decreasing severity and extent of inflammation in a rat model of colitis (Rashidian et al, 2014). In another study, evaluating the volatile oil of ginger (with zingiberene as the dominant composition) in vitro and in vivo has suggested the impact of the oil in cell-mediated immune response and nonspecific proliferation of T-cell which might play a role in inflammatory conditions (Zhou et al, 2006).…”
