Protective effect of ebselen on experimental testicular torsion and detorsion injury

Abstract: Ebselen is used as a drug in clinical trials against stroke, reperfusion injury with anti-atherosclerotic and renoprotective effects. The aim of this study is to investigate the protective effect of ebselen, on torsion/detorsion (T/D)-induced biochemical and histopathological changes in experimental testicular ischaemia/reperfusion injury. A total of 28 male Wistar Albino rats were divided into four groups: group 1(sham-operated group, n = 7), group 2(ebselen group, n = 7), group 3(torsion/detorsion + saline, … Show more

“…These findings suggest that ebselen has scavenging properties against ROS. 49 a-Lipoic acid is important for its role in dehydrogenase reactions in the mitochondria. [50][51][52] Ozbal et al treated rats that underwent 2-h of ischemia and 2-h of reperfusion, with a-lipoic acid applied 30 min before detorsion.…”

“…In addition, imbalance of the oxidant/antioxidant status results in activation of inflammatory responses with increased release of inflammatory cytokines, which aggravates testicular tissue injury (Zhou et al ., ). In agreement with this line, reduction of oxidative/nitrosative stress effectively ameliorated torsion/detorsion (T/D)‐induced testicular injury in previous studies (Meštrović et al ., ; Rifaioglu et al ., ; Yulug et al ., ; Ozbek et al ., ).…”

“…It exhibits anti-atherosclerotic and renoprotective effects; therefore, clinical trials are currently investigating its efficacy against stroke and reperfusion injury (30). It is considered an antioxidant and ROS scavenger and reduces the oxidative biochemical and histopathological damage that occur following tIR (31).…”
