Protective Effect of Deer Bone Oil on Cartilage Destruction in Rats with Monosodium Iodoacetate (MIA)-Induced Osteoarthritis

Abstract: The anti-osteoarthritic activity of the methanol fraction of deer bone oil extract (DBO-M) was evaluated in interleukin (IL)-1β-inflamed primary rabbit chondrocytes and in rats with monosodium iodoacetate (MIA)-induced osteoarthritis. The active compound in DBO-M was analyzed using a direct infusion liquid chromatography quadrupole (LCQ) ion-trap electrospray ionization (ESI)-mass spectrometer (MS). DBO-M significantly suppressed the IL-1β-induced sulfated-glycosaminoglycan (s-GAG) release from chondrocyte, an… Show more

“…Osteoarthritis (OA) is a complex disease involving the whole synovial joint tissue. OA is the most common form of arthritis, characterized by cartilage destruction, as well as synovial inflammation and subchondral bone remodeling [1,2]. Animal models of OA have greatly improved our understanding of its pathogenesis and treatment.…”

“…Deer horn extract has been considered as a noteworthy health restorative in traditional medicine amongst several Asian countries 67 . Oily DBE and CPC were recently revealed to have anti-inflammatory properties and reduce the morphological deviations related with osteoarthritic cartilage damage in animal models of OA 68,69 .…”
