Protective Effect of Cod (Gadus macrocephalus) Skin Collagen Peptides on Acetic Acid‐Induced Gastric Ulcer in Rats

Abstract: This research was performed to explore the protective effect of cod skin collagen peptides (CCP) on gastric ulcer induced by acetic acid. The CCP were fractionated into low molecular CCP (LMCCP, Mw < 3 kDa) and high molecular CCP (HMCCP, Mw > 3 kDa). In HMCCP and LMCCP, glycine of accounted for about one-third of the total amino acids without cysteine and tryptophan, and hydrophobic amino acids accounted for about 50%. After 21 d CCP treatment (60 or 300 mg/kg, p.o./daily), the healing effects on acetic acid-i… Show more

“…Natural bioactive peptides with multiple biological mechanisms play a vital role in preventing and treating gastric and peptic ulcer diseases. For example, a collagen peptide derived from the skin of Cod (Gadus macrocephalus) has a significant protective effect against acetic acid-induced gastric ulcers [ 16 ]. Fish provides a rich source of collagen with high nutritional quality and is an ideal source for the preparation of collagen peptides [ 17 , 18 ].…”

“…To our knowledge, MCPs, as the derivatives of marine collagen, contain a large amount of Gly, Pro, and Hyp (the characteristic amino acid sequences of collagen). This unique type of amino acid composition encouraged the formation of ECM, which might be another reason for enhanced chemotaxis of fibroblasts 36) .…”

“…Increasing gastric mucosal protective agents were being used clinically, but their chemical-based agents would be hazardous to human body when taken for a long period, thereby there was an urgent requirement to seek highly active green healthy gastric protective raw materials and develop innovative gastric protective products. Hitherto, multiple bioactive effects of protein peptides had been investigated and it was indicated that protein peptides had excellent intestinal absorption properties and outstanding physiological activity, which could have a preventive protective effect against alcohol acute gastric mucosal injury by safeguarding gastric mucosal defense barriers as well as elevating the level of anti-alcohol-induced oxidative free radicals [6,7]. Soybean peptides treatment were revealed to substantially reduce ulcer index in mice, indicating its protective effect on the gastric mucosa of mice.…”
