Protective effect of bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) on cisplatin induced ovarian damage in rat

Abstract: Cisplatin is one of the most effective chemotherapeutic agents but injury may occur at higher doses. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of bilberry on cisplatin induced toxic effects in rat ovary. Twenty-one female Wistar-Albino rats were utilized to form three groups: In group 1 (control group), each rat received intraperitoneal injection of 1 mL of 0.9 % NaCl saline solution during 10

“…Experiments using rats exposed to cisplatin and co-treatment with antioxidants such as bilberry, mesna, sildenafil citrate, and hydrogen-rich saline have shown protective effects in the ovary. Co-treatment with bilberry increased the activity of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione-s-transferase (GST), and glutathione peroxidase and reduced malondialdehyde levels [99]. Similar results were obtained in a study using mesna.…”

“…3B). The ratio between body weight and isolated kidney weight, also known as the kidney index, is often used to reflect kidney damage because a kidney with impaired function has a greater weight due to edema [23]. Treatment with DP significantly rescued the change in body weight and the kidney/body weight ratio (Fig.…”

“…The co-administration of substances that have an antioxidant potential or another mode of action that may prevent or reverse the adverse effects of a chemical compound has been widely studied (Corsetti et al, 2011;Mukhopadhyay et al, 2013;Pandir et al, 2014;Sooriyaarachchi et al, 2012), because many medications are needed for the treatment of metabolic dysfunctions and other diseases (Pandir et al, 2014;Sooriyaarachchi et al, 2012).…”
