Protective effect of berberine on doxorubicin-induced acute hepatorenal toxicity in rats

Abstract: Doxorubicin (DOX), a potent broad‑spectrum chemotherapeutic agent used for the treatment of several types of cancer, is largely limited due to its serious side effects on non‑target organs. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate whether berberine (Ber), an isoquinoline alkaloid, could reduce DOX‑induced acute hepatorenal toxicity in rats. Fifty rats were randomly divided into five groups: i) Control group, ii) DOX group, iii) DOX+Ber (5 mg kg) group; iv) DOX+Ber (10 mg kg), and v) DOX+Ber (20 mg kg) grou… Show more

“…BBR has been reported to have biochemical and pharmacological effects such as antidiabetic, anticancer, anti-fibrotic, antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory (11)(12)(13)(14)(15). Recent studies have reported that BBR ameliorates renal conditions such as podocyte injury, nephrotoxicity, acute hepato-renal toxicity, and type 2 diabetic nephropathy (9,(16)(17)(18). Additionally, BBR inhibits…”

“…Ber is extracted from Rhizoma coptidis , and the latter has also been used to treat diabetes mellitus in China for >1,400 years ( 14 ). Additionally, it has also been demonstrated that Ber alleviates the acute cardiotoxicity and hepatorenal toxicity resulting from doxorubicin treatment in rats ( 15 , 16 ). However, to the best of our knowledge, no study to date has been performed concerning the protective effects of Ber on aconite-induced myocardial toxicity.…”

“…Berberine (BBR) is a type of isoquinolone alkaloid that is extracted from the widely used Chinese herb, Rhizoma coptidis . Recent studies have indicated that BBR has multiple pharmacological activities, including hypolipidemic, antioxidant and glucose-lowering, suggesting that it may have clinical potential as an alternative therapeutic drug for diabetic complications ( 8 , 9 ). Liu et al ( 10 ) reported that BBR effectively lowered blood glucose and lipid levels through suppression of oxidative stress.…”
