Protective Effect of a Lignan-enriched Extract ofFructus schisandraeon Physical Exercise Induced Muscle Damage in Rats

Abstract: We have demonstrated that pretreatment with a lignan‐enriched extract of Fructus schisandrae (FS) protected against physical exercise‐induced muscle damage in rats. The muscle protection afforded by FS pretreatment was associated with a significant enhancement in hepatic antioxidant status, as assessed by hepatic glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Pretreating rats with α‐tocopherol acetate, though decreasing the MDA level in skeletal muscle, did not protect against exercise‐induced muscle dama… Show more

“…Whereas the ex vivo antioxidant activity produced by Chinese tonifying herbs, as assessed by measuring the extent of the enhancement of hepatic GRC, may reflect their beneficial effect on hepatic glutathione antioxidant status in vivo. Previous studies from our laboratory have demonstrated that the enhancement of glutathione antioxidant system could protect against oxidative damage induced in hepatic, myocardial as well as skeletal muscle tissues in rodents (Ko et al, 1995b(Ko et al, , 1996Yim et al, 1998). The hepatic GRC promoting action produced by Chinese tonifying herbs may represent a generalized in vivo antioxidant action that can counteract the increased formation of free radicals, as in the case of agingrelated disorders.…”

“…As the main active components of Fructus Schisandrae, lignans have been shown in various studies to have diverse effects, such as pretreatment on physical exercise-induced muscle damage [27], anti-proliferative effects on tumor cells [28], [29] and anti-hepatitis B virus (HBV) activity in vitro [30]. This is in addition to their well-studied influence on the liver [31][33].…”
