Protective action of selenium against mercury in northern creek chubs

Abstract: We found selenium dixoide an effective antagonist to the toxic effects of mercuric chloride in the northern creek chub (Semotilus atromaculatus). Selenium pretreatment increased the whole body accumulation of mercury at lower environmental Hg concentrations. It decreased mercury accumulation in survivors at higher, acutely toxic concentrations.

“…Selenium forms complexes with copper (Amdur et al, 1991), arsenic (Levander, 1977), cadmium (Van Puymbroeck et al, 1982), and mercury (Southworth et al, 1994) that can reduce the toxicity of selenium. Antagonism has also been observed between aqueous selenium (as selenite) and mercury (#2) in northern creek chubs (Kim et al, 1977) and in other "sh species (Turner and Swick, 1983;Cuvin and Furness, 1988). Stingy Run and Little Scary Creek had elevated water levels of arsenic, chromium, nickel, and selenium and "sh livers had elevated levels of arsenic, copper, and selenium.…”

“…Mercury was analyzed because of its potential ecosystem and human health effects, and because recreational fishers were anxious to learn about a potential risk from mercury. Selenium was analyzed because of its reported protective effects against mercury toxicity (Ganther et al, 1972; Kim et al, 1977; Ringdal and Julshamn, 1985; Satoh et al, 1985). We examined whether New Jersey’s legal size limits for striped bass fishing, imposed an exposure burden on people who consume legal-sized fish.…”

“…Onion and garlic are known to contain selenium which interferes in the Hg metabolism suppressing Hg accumulation (WHO Food additives series: 44). Selenium oxide is an effective antagonist to the toxic effects of mercuric chloride in fish (Kim et al, 1977). Selenium has been shown to counteract the toxicity of methyl-Hg in many systems (Whanger, 1992), including neuron cultures.…”
