Protection of salvianolate against atherosclerosis via regulating the inflammation in rats

Abstract: Inflammation plays an essential role in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis. Our study was aimed to investigate whether salvianolate, a novel water-soluble phenolic compound of Danshen, alleviates atherosclerosis via regulating the inflammation in rats. High fat diet feeding plus vitamin D3 injection was used to induce atherosclerosis in rats. Salvianolate (60, 120 or 240 mg/kg) or placebo was given to atherosclerotic rats. The plasma lipids, interleukin 6 (IL-6) and C reactive protein (CRP) were measured b… Show more

“…Using atherosclerosis rats challegened by HFD, salvianolate treatment dose-dependently (60, 120 and 240 mg/kg for 12 weeks, i.p.) alleviated the atherosclerotic process via decreasing the levels of proinflammatory cytokines (plasma interleukin-6 (IL-6) and C reactive protein (CRP)) and increasing the number of regulatory T cells (Tregs) (cluster of differentiation (CD)4+CD25+Foxp3+) [82]. Tregs is demonstrated to prevent the development of atherosclerosis by reducing IL-6 expression [106] and CRP production [107].…”

“…Salvianolate can also inhibit reactive oxygen species (ROS) production [17] and improve microvascular flow by inhibiting oxidative stress and apoptosis [5]. In addition, salvianolate can reduce serum IL-6, CRP levels or myocardial ischemia reperfusion injury induced by PCI in atherosclerosis rats [3,18].…”

“…Salvianolate is a traditional Chinese medicine extracted from salvia. Previous studies have confirmed that salvianolate has multiple effects including anti-inflammation [3], anti-platelet [4] and coronary microcirculation improvement [5], which could be a good candidate to improve PCI related myocardial injury or myocardial infarction. Till now, there has been no clinical data about whether salvianolate can reduce incidence or severity of PCI-related myocardial injury or myocardial infarction in non-STsegment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS) patients undergoing elective PCI.…”

“…The syndrome differentiation in TCM of salvianolate injection is blood stasis syndrome, usually occurring in CHD, arrhythmia and congestive heart failure. Pharmacological studies indicated that salvianolate injection could protect cardiomyocytes via reducing the levels of proinflammatory cytokines and inhibiting reactive oxygen species production [ 11 , 12 ]. A systematic review made by Zhang [ 13 ] in 2016 showed that the combined use of salvianolate injection and western medicine improved both the total effective rate and the electrocardiogram effective rate.…”
